A saree (also spelled Sari) is an outer garment, mainly worn by women of the Indian subcontinent, which is made of approximately six (6) meters of fabric. Saree worn with a blouse or choli is wrapped around the waist over a petticoat with the left end made to hang over the head or shoulder. A saree comes in different types of fabric, color, design and styles.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ever graceful Sari is one of the most iconic dresses to come out of the Indian subcontinent and South Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From India to Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and more, the women of South Asia have found love with the sari and have draped this piece of unstitched fabric around their bodies for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can also be used to denote the entire ensemble of the sari drape in addition to the short blouse and petticoat with which it is commonly worn today. SARI BACKGROUND, HISTORY AND ORIGINS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to legend, the sari got a head start with the Indus Valley Civilization of Northwest India, dating back to about 2800 to 1800 BC. The cause of the sari is believed to have been furthered by the proliferation of cotton cultivation and weaving from the 5th millennium BC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That sari revolution started with cotton weavers who made curtains for women made of cotton fabric dyed in different kinds of dyes from indigo to lacquer, turmeric, red madder and other kinds of dyes. The success of the saree is largely based on the impressive handicraft culture on which it was based. For example, India has one of the best handicraft cultures in the world, from silk weaving to dyeing, printing and more. However, the diversity of these cultures means that there are slight differences in the way these are made in the different regions of India, Pakistan and the other countries where they are worn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Uttar Pradesh city of Varanasi, it is not uncommon to see weavers using traditional wooden looms to weave Banarasi silk sarees. Common fabric types are silk, cotton, crepe, chiffon, jacquard, khadi, etc. These sarees reflect the story of the regions they come from. Although handwoven fabric for sarees is still popular, globalization and the demand for cheaper fabrics have made machinewoven sarees more popular in recent times. This is both good and bad. Good in the sense that people have access to different types of fabrics and designs, but bad in the sense that old traditional weaving families are gradually becoming unemployed, especially with cheaper, low-quality traditional clothes shipped from China to the region and neighboring countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DIFFERENT STYLES AND TYPES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are different types of sari styles from different regions across India. The most popular of these are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Tan sarees:<\/strong> originating from West Bengal, this style of saree is made of light cotton fabric with thick and beautiful borders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Kasavu saree<\/strong> from Kerala, with thick gold edges, with gold threads and different colours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Banarasi silk saree<\/strong> from Uttar Pradesh, usually with gold embroidery and made of high quality banarasi silk, handwoven in Varanasi, UP.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Paithani silk saree<\/strong> from Maharashtra usually made of weaving two sides together, with borders with oblique square designs and a pallu with peacock designs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Kanjeevaram silk saree<\/strong> from Tamil Nadu has vibrant and beautiful colors and is a hit among South Indian brides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Sambalpuri saree<\/strong> from Odisha are hand woven and made from threads that are woven before being dyed so the colors never fade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Bandhani saree<\/strong> from Gujarat and Rajasthan made from a special tie-and-dye process, hence the origin of the name of \u201cBandhan\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Leheriya saree<\/strong> , also from Bandhani, is made from a special binding and dyeing process whose main difference from Bandhani saree is the way the fabric is tied during the dyeing process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. Muga sari<\/strong> Made from special highly durable Muga silk from Assam, these are a great option for family events and spectacular getaways.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. Chanderi saree<\/strong> from Madhya Pradesh is made from weaving cotton, silk and zari together. This saree evokes royalty and is quite gorgeous.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  11. Jamdani saree<\/strong> is another great saree from Bengal made of light cotton and usually with floral designs. They are popular among Bangladeshi brides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  12. Phulkari saree<\/strong> has specially made flower arrangements. These sarees are made of khadi or cotton fabrics embroidered with dental floss.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
